Brothers put dent in Old Boys’ top- four ambition

- TRENT SLATTER

NORTH Ward’s hopes of making the Townsville and Districts Rugby Union finals have suffered a blow after a 72- 7 loss to Brothers at Townsville Sports Reserve on Saturday night.

The Old Boys were looking to break into the top four following last weekend’s win over Charters Towers, but Brothers showcased their attacking flair to claim an emphatic victory.

Meanwhile, defending premiers Teachers West kept their unbeaten record intact with a 48- 14 win over Burdekin on Friday night.

The Bulldogs have racked up some massive scores in recent weeks, but they had a disrupted preparation when kick- off had to be pushed back after an accident closed the highway.

Harry Willocks, Gene Morgan, and Daniel Chorley each scored two tries for Teachers, but coach Terry Shiells said the conditions weren’t ideal for either team in attack.

“It became quite late so we had a pretty heavy dew and you get a slippery ball, but I don’t think that’s any excuse.

“Burdekin are a good side. They played very well. Their defence is very good so they make you work hard on your attack and that makes you work hard on maintaining the footy,” Shiells said.

“We still played very well, but we probably didn’t execute as well as could in a few phases.”

Teachers have all but wrapped up the minor premiership, but Shiells said building their combinations was still a big focus as they head towards the finals. prizes, mini cent sale, morning tea from 9.00am, calling starts 10.00am.
