Brothers back at full strength, belt Burdekin 70- 12

- TRENT SLATTER

DEFENDING premiers Brothers have fired a warning shot to their TDRL rivals with a resounding 70- 12 win over Burdekin at Ayr’s Rugby Park yesterday afternoon.

Winger Shaq Congoo led the way as Brothers’ outside backs piled on the points to notch their highest score of the season.

Brothers have had to manage a few injuries in recent weeks, but captain Jack Kelleher felt yesterday’s performance showed how good they can be when it all comes together.

“We’ve got a pretty strong side and we turned up today and played pretty well,” Kelleher said.

“I thought our middle was really strong, our halves really controlled the game, and all our outside backs were good.

“We had a couple of blokes coming back from injury so it was a good hitout for them.

“We’re doing all the right things to be strong so hopefully moving forward we can keep getting those little things right coming into finals.”

Meanwhile, Herbert River have kept the pressure on Brothers at the top of the ladder after claiming a 30- 14 win over Western Lions in Ingham on Saturday night.

The Crushers raced to a 24- 0 lead at halftime before the Lions mounted a comeback with three quick tries, but a late try to the home side sealed their ninth straight win.

“Our blokes were pretty clinical. They just don’t make a lot of mistakes,” Crushers president Joe Pennisi said.

“Western Lions pressured our line for a long time then we got the ball and raced the length of the field to score a couple of tries.

“We haven’t played for a couple of weeks so they were a little bit rusty, but I thought it was a good effort.”

Centrals were also victorious against Charters Towers on Saturday night, winning 38- 22.
