Woman faces court after assault in pub

-

A WOMAN who squeezed her daughter- in- law around the neck at a Magnetic Island pub has faced court.

The 44- year- old woman, who can’t be named for legal reasons, faced Townsville Magistrates Court to be sentenced for common assault on Friday.

The court heard the woman had been at the Picnic Bay Hotel on May 25 2017 when she had an altercation with her son’s female partner.

Police prosecutor Adrian Carter said the two women met in the main bar and the defendant had clenched her fists and leaned towards the victim.

“The victim has tried to create space and has tried to walk away from the defendant,” he said. “However, the defendant has then grabbed the victim by the left side of her neck with her right hand.

“She’s squeezed and continued talking to the victim.”

Mr Carter said when interviewed by police, the woman said she had in fact been assaulted by the victim in the bathroom during the evening.

Defence solicitor Zoe Navarro said the woman had concerns about her son’s relationship and she was intoxicated that night.

“She accepts responsibility for her part in the matter.”

The woman was sentenced to serve 40 hours of community service. No conviction was recorded. A domestic violence order has also been made.
