RADIO STAR TELLS OF CARJACKING SCARE:

- SCOTT SAWYER

HIT103.1 Townsville breakfast star Gabi Elgood has been caught up in a dramatic attempted carjacking while driving to work.

The radio presenter said the incident happened during her early morning commute recently.

“I was pretty shaken up when I got to work the other day because I had a bit of a scary incident occur on my drive to work,” she recounted on Cliffo & Gabi.

“Now I drive to work, it was around about 3.45am – so very early hours of the morning,” she said.

“When you’re driving at that time you don’t see a lot of people – the occasional car here and there but that’s about it.

“So when you see a group of four guys walking along the road, you’re a bit suss.

“There were four guys walking along the road and I’m driving along … in the left- hand lane.”

She said she felt “uneasy” about the fact a group of men were walking along the street.

Ms Elgood, 30, said as she got close to the group on Bundock St, near the Woolcock St intersection, one of the men “sprinted” at her car.

“I swerved and I missed him,” she said.

“There was no way I was stopping, I wasn’t slowing down … I probably sped up.”

She said if she hadn’t swerved it was likely she would have hit the man.

When she arrived to work she told her colleagues and was informed it may have been an attempted carjacking.

A colleague told her “that’s how they steal cars”.

She said hearing it was an attemp- ted carjacking “shook her up”.

She’s not entirely sure the incident was an attempted carjacking.

Ms Elgood said the recent incident had left her more wary when driving to work, but she felt the incident had been more a case of “wrong place, wrong time”. “It was all very eerie,” she said. Guy “Cliffo” Clifton said he often wondered whether people walking on the roadside early in the morning were “still out” from the night before.

After the story was told, a woman called to say the same thing had happened to her.
