Redzel’s run right on track for racing duo

- RAY THOMAS

REDZEL began his Everest title defence with a pleasing barrier trial effort at Gosford yesterday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden- trained super sprinter shared the lead in his 800m heat but was not pushed out as he cruised into second placing, beaten less than a length by Show Me The Money.

It was noticeable that Redzel raced without blinkers as the Snowden’s did not want him to have a taxing trial so early in his preparation.

“I thought he went great,’’ said Peter Snowden. “We only wanted him to have an easy, soft trial and he has pulled up well which is the main thing.

“He’s still a bit heavy at the moment but he looks healthy and bright and his work at home is sharp.’’

Snowden confirmed Redzel will have another barrier trial hitout, most likely at Rosehill on August 20, before the sixyear- old gelding returns to racing.

“We plan to run him firstup on September 1 in the Concorde Stakes at Randwick,’’ Snowden said.

Redzel is expected to have another start, most likely in The Shorts on September 15, before he lines up in the $ 13 million The Everest ( 1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 13.

Snowden is following virtually an identical program to the one they used so successful with Redzel last spring — two barrier trials before the sprinter won the Concorde Stakes and The Shorts, then another barrier trial before he took out the inaugural The Everest.

The Snowden stable has kicked off the new season in tremendous form after preparing five winners last Saturday including the very promising Military Zone at Randwick, and four wins at Kembla Grange with Navigator, Spin, She’s Furline and More Moet.

“We sent six horses to Kembla and had four winners and two quinellas,’’ Snowden said.

Military Zone reeled off brilliant sectionals to score at Randwick, his second win in succession from just three starts.

“We are thinking of running Military Zone in a Group 3 race in a fortnight to see what he can do there,’’ Snowden said. “He was very impressive last Saturday.’’

Snowden is hoping to continue the stable’s winning momentum at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday with their entries including the emerging stayer Emperor’s Way in the Premier’s Cup Prelude ( 1800m).
