Man dies after car runs off Ring Road
A DRIVER was killed after his car ran off the Townsville Ring Rd and burst into flames yesterday.
Senior Sergeant district duty officer Scott Warrick said about 4.50pm a vehicle was seen by witnesses travelling at high speed along Dalrymple Rd.
“As a result of that action the vehicle has left the overpass,” he said.
“It has travelled, we estimate, about 100- 150m from the road, it has crashed and burst into flames.
“Sadly a male occupant has been declared deceased at the scene.”
As of yesterday evening Snr Sgt Warrick said the man’s age was unknown but police believed he was between 20 to 30 years old. The man’s identity could not be confirmed at this stage.
Snr Sgt Warrick said it was too early to determine the exact cause of the crash but speed was likely a factor.
“Forensic crash investigators have arrived, numerous witnesses have contacted or approached us at the scene and indicated the vehicle was observed travelling at an excessively high speed just prior to the accident,” he said.
QAS senior operations supervisor Tony Kirkham said the man suffered significant injuries.
“QAS did all they could but unfortunately the resuscitation efforts were not successful,” he said.
