Mavericks set to test Cyclones
THE Townsville Cyclones expect to walk into a cauldron today as the Mackay Mavericks host their first game of the 2018- 19 North Queensland Gridiron League today.
Possessing the only specialised gridiron field in the competition, the Mavericks will brave the summer sun when they tackle last year’s premiers the Cyclones at the Mackay Wanderers FC grounds.
Last year’s opening game in Mackay attracted about 1000 spectators and the Cyclones hope to replicate that support this season.
Up from nine- man teams to a full compliment of 11, the competition between Townsville, Cairns and Mackay is running NFL- calibre rules and Mavericks quarterback Matt Camilleri said that alone was evidence the sport was growing.
“We’re not playing a novelty version of the sport, we’re playing a 100 per cent, the real deal – so this is good step for us all,” he said.
The Mavericks were last year’s surprise packets and beat Townsville in their inaugural home game, defying expectations that they would struggle in their opening season.
Cairns have the Round 2 bye after falling to Townsville last weekend at Bindal Sports Ground.
