Jet set to skirt acclaim

- NATHAN EXELBY

CHAMPAGNE Jet was a logical choice of name for the filly who will carry the hopes and dreams of 18 very excited owners into tomorrow’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Champagne Jet is one of seven horses vying for a slice of the extra $500,000 Racing Women’s Bonus for all-female owned horses.

In the six years the Racing Women’s Bonus has been available, all-female owned horses have won three times – Real Surreal (2013), Le Chef (2015) and Sunlight (2018).

Sometimes you don’t need to be on the podium to be in the money. Two years ago Real Princess was only eighth across the line but scooped the $325,000 top bonus for being first eligible horse past the post.

Stirling Cincotta’s 2Kthoroughbreds has emerged on the syndication scene in the past 18 months with immediate success and their colours will be sported by Champagne Jet and Betaima in tomorrow’s Classic.

Cincotta’s wife Elise took a shine to Champagne Jet at the sales and decided she would be the perfect horse for an all-ladies syndicate.

“There are 18 girls in it, 16 of them first-time owners. They each spent $1100 to get into the horse and now they’re in the Magic Millions,” Elise said.

“The girls had not been involved (in racing) other than getting dressed up and having champagne at the races. Their experience with the insight behind the scenes, the trainers, the videos and watching the horse go from the sale to this level is something they have all fallen in love with.”

One of Champagne Jet’s part-owners, Gaby Doxey, has until now never had her name in the racebook.

“It’s my first horse and it’s been the best experience,” she said.

Racing in Women founder Katie Page-harvey said syndicates like the one behind Champagne Jet are the reason the concept was set up.
