’BLOODY SCUM’

Residents angered by piano’s destruction

- TONY RAGGATT

THE destruction of a much-loved attraction at Radical Bay on Magnetic Island, a piano complete with timber deck, has outraged residents.

Island resident Mary Vernon visited the site to see the piano and deck had been burnt to the ground.

Ms Vernon posted photos of the scene on Facebook which attracted a lot of comments.

“Bloody scum,” one person commented.

“That’s so awful,” said another. The piano, which is not the first to be erected on the sand dunes of one of the island’s most spectacular beaches, had become an attraction for locals and tourists.

It had been featured in photos on several social media sites.

Ms Vernon believed the piano was the third instrument on the beach.

“It started some years ago when someone took a piano there and built a deck,” Ms Vernon said.

“It was a huge operation.” Ms Vernon said the piano remained there for some time attracting a lot of attention from visitors but eventually suffered from exposure to the elements and was removed.

“Suddenly another piano appeared and someone else put a deck there,” Ms Vernon said.

“It stayed there for a while but it too rotted away.

“This (latest piano) is the third one. Now someone has set a fire under it and burned the whole thing down. B-----ds.

“Someone must have lit the fire. I doubt it would be locals. I think karma will get them.”

Ms Vernon said the piano was on the list of things to do for visitors.

“It’s become quite an attraction. People come to the island and say they want to see it. I think it’s on Tripadvisor,” she said.

People are now questioning whether another piano can appear.

The road into Radical Bay, along with two of the island’s other gems, Arthur and Florence bays, has deteriorated with huge washouts and pot holes.

“It will be interesting to see what happens next,” Ms Vernon said.

“Getting a truck with a piano down that road is quite a logistic exercise.”
