Bowen rallies over dog-act theft Betty to get back on roll

- JACOB MILEY

A BOWEN retiree whose trailer used to cart his elderly dog to the beach was stolen has been blown away by generosity after a local company offered to make him a new one.

The homemade trailer used to take his 12-year-old pooch, Betty, for a swim was stolen from under Ken and Robyn Lake’s Oak Crescent home on Thursday morning.

The trailer was the only mode of transport for long distances for Betty, who has had “crook hips” since she was a pup, Mr Lake said.

Every second day they often travelled the 1.5km to a strip of coastline

Greys Bay.

“She still likes going for a swim,” Mr Lake said. “She gets a sudden burst of energy … and then she suffers from it the next day.”

Mr Lake, who only relocated to Bowen from Tully last year, said he was in disbelief when he saw that the trailer was gone.

“We can understand if they want to pinch our bikes … but someone pinching the trailer, that’s a bit of a shock.

“Betty’s not all that impressed. Every time I get the pushbike out she gets out … to see if she is going and realises there’s no trailer,” he said. west of

But the Bowen community has banded together, with one business offering to construct another to get Betty moving again.

“We were actually amazed by the response, that’s for sure,” he said.

The post was shared thousands of times among the local Facebook community page.

Mr Lake wouldn’t reveal the name of the good-hearted company just yet but said he was meeting with them today to discuss design and measurement for the new trailer.

“She (Betty) looks forward to an adventure to the beach,” Mr Lake said.
