Suspended sentence for steroid possession

- TESS IKONOMOU

A GYM junkie found possessing steroids has been sentenced to a suspended term of six months’ imprisonment.

Kadir Aganovic, 37, pleaded guilty to six charges, including possessing dangerous drugs and unlawful possession of a weapon, when he faced Townsville Magistrates Court via video link.

Police prosecutor Mark Fenlon said that in May last year police searched a Rosslea home and found drugs, such as testosterone, in the unit.

An extendible baton was also found.

Aganovic and another man were charged, with one of the men scaling a 2m fence with wire to evade police who were conducting the search.

Defence solicitor Jessica Shuttleworth said the man had been a productive contributor to the community.

“Prior to being arrested he was working at the solar farm in Townsville. Before that appointment he had various (jobs) in the construction industry,” she said.

Ms Shuttleworth said while in custody, Aganovic had completed a Year 12 equivalent qualification at the University of Southern Queensland.

“He intends on pursuing further study options once he is released. However, his priority upon release will be treatment for his drug use,” she said.

Ms Shuttleworth said Aganovic worked out at the gym as a distraction from drug use.

The court heard he managed to stay clear of drugs for 10 months before a hand injury that required surgery stopped him from going to the gym and contributed to his reoffending.

The court heard Aganovic is expecting the birth of his first child later this month.

Acting Magistrate Susie Warrington said she had been persuaded by the defence that Aganovic had a positive future ahead of him.

“Now you do have support here in Townsville, your sister is here today and she’s provided a letter in your support,” Ms Warrignton said.

“I have given regard to the steps that you have taken already towards rehabilitation … You’ve obviously taken the matter seriously.”

Family and friends of the man sat in the back of the court in support, and breathed sighs of relief when they heard the sentence.
