O, what a feeling to start uni

- JULIA BRADLEY

STUDENTS starting at James Cook University’s Townsville campus have the chance to make lifelong friends when orientation kicks off this week.

Orientation Week, or O Week, is the biannual event for students to meet staff and mentors, and become adjusted to university life.

James Cook University student transitions and experience co-ordinator Tony Hewitt said it was about getting students comfortable with the transition from school to university.

“(It’s) getting students used to the campus (and) finding out about the three support services that we have available,” he said.

“It is a big change. There is a bit of stress and anxiety that comes with starting university.”

Former Pimlico State High School student Sarah Wright, 18, who is studying medicine this year, said she was excited to jump straight into university life.

“I’m stoked, really excited. It was too real when I saw all the other students starting with their tour – it wasn’t feeling real until then,” she said.

“I’m excited to jump straight into the learning part of it. I’m looking forward to getting into lectures as soon as possible.”

Ms Wright was happy to be starting medicine alongside her twin sister, Annabel.

“I am really happy we both got into it. It’s been a habit of ours to help each other out in our weakest areas – to help each other study,” she said.
