Chris makes a floorless act of generosity
ACTOR Chris Milligan has thrown his support behind Townsville residents affected by the flood.
Neighbours star Mr Milligan, 30, and his brother Michael, 34, own Brisbane-based construction materials company European Hardware, which specialises in timber flooring and decking.
They are donating flooring to Townsville families.
“I have access to the very resources that will provide Townsville families with relief, so together we have launched the re-flooring project,” Mr Milligan said.
Gold Coast company Harmony Timber Floors has followed their lead and donated house flooring.
Chris and Michael set up a fundraising page with the initial goal of doing the same for 20 more flood-affected households.
The brothers have already raised $3000 which is enough for another two houses, bringing the total to four.
The pair recently visited Townsville to let two families know they had been chosen.
Chely Williams, 50, whose Hermit Park house was inundated by floodwater, was overjoyed to get the news.
Her sister Tania Weston, 52, said she cried all day and couldn’t believe it.
“She said: ‘oh, my goodness, I can’t believe this is happening to me’,” Ms Weston said.
“Because she is underinsured it means she will be able to afford to replace some of the stuff she really does need, it has taken the financial burden off her for sure.”
Rosslea resident Debbie Sullivan, 59, said she was stunned to find out she had received the donation.
“I didn’t have words for it, I didn’t believe it. I asked my daughter if it was a joke,” Ms Sullivan said.
“I lost everything, all I have is the shell of my house, no kitchen … I started pulling up my vinyl tiles because there was water underneath, I was going to have concrete floors,” she said.
Her husband was diagnosed with leukaemia last year and had to give up work, so they have been unable to afford home insurance.
“I’ve had insurance all my life up until a few years ago, that is one thing we had to cut back on,” she said.
