Women’s Day event inspires
DRIVEN by a strong urge to care for others Courtney Tighe dreams of following her grandfather’s footsteps and joining the Royal Australian Air Force.
Ms Tighe was one of several women and female students who were given an insight into the Australian Defence Force’s recruitment process at a special event honouring International Women’s Day.
The 24-year-old childcare worker said the Australian Defence Force was attractive because it offered a meaningful career.
“I want to be a medic. I’ve always wanted to help people and there is that care factor in my current job as a childcare worker,” Ms Tighe said.
“My grandfather was in the RAAF and it always looked after him and our family.
“I’ve been in childcare for years now and I need a change.”
Ms Tighe said the information given helped increase her understanding of the initiation process.
“I got a fair bit out of it and I know what’s going to happen and where I’m going to go, so that made me feel really good,” she said.
“I’d love to join as soon as possible, I’m very, very keen.”
To celebrate International Women’s Day, Defence Force Recruiting hosted a special information session last Wednesday to inspire and educate young women about careers in the navy, army and air force.
The open forum allowed local female prospective candidates to meet with current serving women to get insights into their military experiences and careers in the ADF.
The event provided information on the recruitment process, fitness requirements and any upcoming Defence Work Experience or Recruitment events.
Specialist Recruiting Officer for Women Sergeant Kylie Walters hopes the event will inspire potential candidates to pursue a career in the ADF.
