Solo world cyclist not thwarted by thieves

- KEAGAN ELDER

A BRITISH teenager who became a Townsville victim of crime has finished his roundthe-world cycling trip.

Charlie Condell, 18, is believed to be the youngest Englishman to cycle solo around the world.

He completed his 30,000km adventure on March 11 after setting off 248 days earlier.

But his record attempt was jeopardised after he had his bicycle stolen in Townsville on day 104, from the Rambutan hostel he was staying at.

“I had my bike in the garage then I got up at 5.30am hoping for an early start, but it was gone,” Mr Condell told the Townsville Bulletin at the time.

“(Thieves) took pretty much everything, that was all my camping gear. They’ve nicked my passports … and even my socks.”

Eight days after having his bike stolen he was able to continue his adventure after bicycle company Cervelo donated him a new bike.

Mr Condell told the BBC: “Australia was a very weird one because it certainly put a stopper on things, although I never thought I would stop doing it as I knew there would be a way to figure it out.”

He said his future adventures may include climbing and running.
