Locals out in cold on solar jobs
SOLAR and battery storage installers are missing out on hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of work because of a silly requirement for them to be members of the Clean Energy Council, Hinchinbrook MP Nick Dametto says.
Mr Dametto has raised the issue as the State Government launches a trial of rebates of up to $3500 for solar installations in rental properties in Bundaberg, Townsville and Gladstone.
Mr Dametto said he had been approached by several Townsville tradies concerned about the Government’s policy favouring members of the Clean Energy Council.
He said it meant installers who were members of the Smart Energy Council had been frozen out.
“This is a ridiculous situation,” Mr Dametto said.
“At a time when the State Gov- ernment’s message to the people of Townsville has been to use local tradespeople to rebuild our city after flooding, the Government should heed their own advice.”
Townsville contractor Matt Bellinger of Bellingers Electrical said it was extremely frustrating.
“We can’t understand why we as locals have been excluded when we have all the tickets and accreditations,” Mr Bellinger said.
Energy Minister Anthony Lynham said safety was paramount.
“My department selected an expert supplier panel of 93 solar and battery suppliers, as well as leading electrical safety inspectors to do free post-installation battery inspections. This includes 17 suppliers which service the Townsville area,” Dr Lynham said.
“All suppliers had to meet rigorous quality and safety criteria, including membership of the Clean Energy Council.”
