Scam roofers’ flight on hold

DETECTIVES have arrested three Irish nationals as they tried to flee Australia and charged them over an alleged roof scam targeting elderly Sydney homeowners.

Investigators determined a scam was under way at a home in Bexley, in Sydney’s south, and contacted the 72-year-old male homeowner.

In late 2018 it was revealed a 90-year-old woman had been approached by a group of men who offered to fix her Burwood home’s roof for $169,000. She paid them but when they came back and asked for a further $220,000, her bank told police.
