Mcguire hungry for a win

- DANIEL MCKENZIE

IT’S a case of been there, done that for Cowboys’ Josh Mcguire when he runs out against his former side the Brisbane Broncos at 1300SMILES Stadium tonight.

Switching north in the offseason, Mcguire is now fully ingrained in his new club and it’s just another game for the Queensland Origin star.

Mcguire, who met the Broncos in Magic Round back in May, said his focus would be on helping the Cowboys get back in the winning column.

“I’ve already played them so it’s all done and dusted, to be honest,” he said. “I’m just excited to play at home; there’s not many games left at 1300SMILES.

“Everyone is pretty hungry and desperate to get back in that winners’ circle.”

With wins eluding the Cowboys of late, the club finds itself 13th on the ladder.

Injuries to the likes of Justin O’neill, Jordan Kahu, Mitch Dunn, Te Maire Martin and Ben Hampton compounding the departures of Ben Barba and Nene Macdonald, the Cowboys have been forced to blood youngsters and slot players in out of position.

Coming off a 28-4 loss against the Tigers in Sydney last week, Mcguire said the side had been struggling to play its best, but was working hard to reverse their fortunes.

“There’s no lack of effort at training,” he said.

“Some things aren’t clicking on field and we need to get better. We’ve just got some young guys playing consistent first grade and learning structures, and it’s a long year when you play NRL and add in injuries.

“We haven’t had smooth sailing, but there’s no excuses, we know we need to get better and we’re trying to get better.

“There’s been external noise from people (on coach Paul Green’s future) who don’t live in the community or haven’t been a part of this club.

“That’s the funny thing about league; everyone wants to point the finger at someone, but at the end of the day, you just need to keep working hard and ticking the boxes, and that stuff kind of goes away when you’re winning.

“We’re trying to tick every box possible and you’re only one or two wins away from turning things around.”
