Little mare is paying her way on the track

- MATTHEW ELKERTON

SHE is the $1400 punt that has paid it back in spades, but there is one thing left for fiveyear-old mare Cinematography to knock off.

Her first win.

The galloper by Ridgeview Park stallion Onemorenomore, has enjoyed a career resurgence since joining the stables of Matthew Mcguire at Townsville last winter.

She has gone on to finish in the placings seven times from 13 starts for the stable including a recent run of fivestraight placings.

But it was a run of form that almost wouldn’t have been with Mcguire missing the expected bidding war on the tried mare as he loaded runners into the boxes at the Townsville Greyhound Club.

“I saw her on the auction site, and thought she showed pace in her races. We had the money there but I couldn’t be online to bid for her,” he said.

“On a whim I called the bloke who was selling her and said if she doesn’t make the reserve price I would take her for it.

“She was passed in at $1300 and we got her for $1400. I couldn’t be happier.”

While the mare was not the easiest horse to get firing early on, Mcguire and his small team at Wulguru soon unlocked her potential finding her best style on the track.

“We just figured it out, but she has also developed too. She has come a long way since coming to the stable,” he said. “If you don’t push her too hard early on, she naturally finds her way to the front and then has enough in reserve to kick on.

“She is only a little filly, but she is as tough as they come. She is little but she thinks she is 10 foot tall.

“She is driving me nuts, though. She just always seems to run into one or two good runners each start. But she is paying her way so I can’t complain too much.”

Not only is the mare paying her way, she has helped pay for several other runners in the stable making more than $20,000 for the trainer off her meagre purchase price.

She will be looking to break that maiden status when she loads into the barriers at Cluden Park today, running out of barrier 10 in the Track Cat Memorial Maiden Handicap over 1000m.

With regular jockey Chelsea Jokic still on the sidelines nursing an injury, Townsville hoop Scott Sheargold has been handed the reins. A decision Mcguire believes is well deserved.

“Scotty rides a few others for us and he does a lot of work for us,” he said.
