Farmers sick of being singled out for blame

-

IN response to Romayne Westwood’s letter to the editor, farmers, in particular cane farmers, have been made scapegoats by governments and minority groups and government departments for decades now.

Farmers have been toeing the line and most of us, not 11 per cent as stated by

Romayne, do the right thing and fulfil the barrage of, in my opinion, communist laws that the Government impose on cane farmers and graziers.

Now that we, the farmers, are fighting back with television ads, the green groups think it’s a major crime. Let me say that everyone plays a part in taking care of the environment, especially the farmer on the land. As a farmer, I believe I am not damaging the Reef. Most farmers have taken major steps in the last decade to combat the foolish way of thinking that farmers are the enemy.

My question to Romayne Westwood would be who will compensate the ordinary taxpayer for the billions of dollars wasted on this farce when, in 10 years, 20 years or 50 years, the sky hasn’t fallen in, the seas haven’t drowned towns and cities, and the Reef is still alive and doing well?

We, the people, are being told by the doomsayers that we must save the planet and 2030 is the cutoff date. I say no human involvement can alter climate change like Mother Nature can. Whether you eat meat, pork, chicken, tomatoes or even a lettuce leaf they are all grown by farmers. It’s amusing that The Greens have failed to stop Adani and now they want to attack soft targets like farmers. We will no longer be soft targets!

Do not forget we are the silent majority and now we are fighting back. Just look at what happened at the last federal election.

SAM TORRISI,

Ingham.
