Engineering consultancy celebrates opening of revamped office

-

GLOBAL engineering consultancy SMEC has celebrated the opening of its newly refurbished fit-for-purpose offices in the Townsville CBD.

Heralded as a significant lift for the CBD, the Cowboys Leagues Club secured SMEC as a major tenant for its second floor in Flinders St earlier this year.

It was a chance for the organisation and its guests to celebrate 20 years of operations for SMEC in Townsville as well as 70 years of global operations.

Graeme Pollock, Market Director Energy and Resources, said the office move highlighted SMEC’S plans for growth and a long-term commitment to the region. “We made a conscious effort four years ago to become more of a part of the fabric of Townsville,” Mr Pollock said.

“We have actively partnered with local industry leaders, including Townsville Enterprise Ltd, the Cowboys, the Townsville Chamber of Commerce and James Cook University — the source of our brains trust.”

Mr Pollock said the Townsville office had grown from nine people to nearly 40 in the past four years and they hoped to continue to grow and prosper.

“When we started planning this office, we were adamant about two things. We wanted to come into the CBD to contribute to rebuilding a vibrant city centre, and we sought out ample open space for communitystyle works,” he said.

This year marks SMEC’S 70th anniversary since construction started on its namesake project, the iconic Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, in 1949.
