WONDERLAND IN SCHOOL LIBRARY

- KATE KAT BANVILLE

A TOWNSVILLE school library could be mistaken for a magical wonderland thanks to its creative design.

Complete with a life-size tree in the centre of the room, St Clare’s Catholic School librarian Mary Hosking said the design was all about “sparking the imagination of young minds”.

“A lot of kids are visual learners so if you’re seeing it, you’re engaging with it and it’s a very physical reminder that gets them excited and sparks their imagination,” Ms Hosking said.

“The tree we have has Australian animals in it and some of the kids think the possums come down at night to read books.

“It creates a sense of magic and encourages them to be imaginative that the books can come alive.”

Ms Hosking said the library had become a hub of excitement for students, who had ownership of keeping it in order.

“It’s their library and the kids see it as that. We have a team of library monitors that reshelve all the books every week, ” she said.

“They’re really passionate about getting it right, which is always cute to watch.”
