Police nab last target in lengthy drug probe

- SAM BIDEY

TOWNSVILLE’S major and organised crime squad has left no stone unturned, arresting its final target in an alleged major drug syndicate.

Detectives arrested 42year-old Kelso man Brett Blanchard yesterday, charging him with 19 offences including one count of trafficking dangerous drugs and six counts of possessing dangerous drugs.

Officers raided a property in Kelso yesterday morning and seized 43g of methamphetamine, nearly $5000 in cash, and small amounts of cocaine and cannabis.

Major and Organised Crime Squad officer-in-charge detective Senior Sergeant Brad Phelps said the property was initially raided late last month and 1.4kg of cannabis, $30,000 cash, a taser and a money counter were seized.

Mr Blanchard was not at the Kelso address when police first raided the property and detectives had been looking for him since.

“We finally caught him and have taken him into custody,” Sen-sgt Phelps said.

“We try not to leave any stone unturned, follow things to conclusion and ensure people are put before the courts for appropriate offences.”

Sen-sgt Phelps said it would be alleged Mr Blanchard sourced the drugs of other suspects who were arrested and charged as part of the longterm operation to bring down the syndicate.

“I’ve said it before but this is a very significant series of arrests,” he said.

Mr Blanchard is due to appear before Townsville Magistrates Court today.

Sen-sgt Phelps said police would be opposing bail.
