SAY GOODBYE TO CROCODILE ROCKER Stadium launch at end of Elton’s road

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

IT IS the farewell tour of a lifetime that is set to make history in Townsville in less than three weeks.

Sir Elton John is due to perform at the Country Bank Stadium on February 29, as part his 270 concert global Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

The concert marks the grand opening and the first official act of the $290 million stadium development.

The flamboyant superstar’s tour manager, D.C. Parmet, who has worked with Elton since 1997, said the retiring English singer was ready to make musical magic in North Queensland.

“We hear that Elton is opening your stadium and that is exciting for many reasons and it is a chance to showcase the new stadium for the local folks,” he said.

“It is going to be a double celebration of the opening of the stadium and Elton’s last show in Townsville.”

The 72-year-old plans to go out with a bang, belting out 24 of his finest and rarest songs from his 58-year career catalogue.

The tour has received outstanding reviews for Elton’s emotional and heartfelt performance, taking his fans on one final trip down memory lane.

Mr Parmet said “a lot of blood sweat and tears” had gone into planning the show.

“Townsville can expect a fantastic show of audio and visual delights and can expect three hours of Elton’s finest and the songs you know and love,” he said.

The Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began on September 8, 2018 in Pennsylvania and is due to wrap up in London in December.

Mr Parmet said it was Townsville’s last chance to see Elton live before he hung up his disco shoes for good.

“This will be our last trip to Townsville and if you miss the show you have missed out on a spectacular event,” he said

“This is it and he has made that very clear and you need to catch him while you can because if you miss him you will be missing memories of a lifetime.”

It doesn’t come easy bringing a grand-scale production like Elton’s set down under with Mr Parmet saying the crew “travel together like an army”.

“To get everything from North America to Australia we had to charter two 747 freighters because we brought everything from America,” he said.

“So you will see the same stage and equipment we used in America, Canada and Europe so you won’t be disappointed.”
