Baker tipped to turn it on

- NICK WRIGHT

A CHAMPION is returning to Townsville, and according to Rodney Anderson he will be better than ever.

Justin Baker will line up for the Heat this season after a stint playing in Qatar, with caps in the Greek league also on his resume.

The power forward was a member of the Heat’s 2017 and 2018 title winning sides, and Anderson said this would make his recruit’s homecoming an easy transition.

The Heat coach had been in constant communication with Baker since he left Townsville, and that relationship would enable the pair to hit the ground running when he arrives in April.

“He knows me really well, knows my system and all the guys as well,” Anderson said.

“Having that familiarity will mean he’s going to be able to come in here and take off where he left before.

“Continuity is a really big thing in our league, so if we can build around the core we have I think we’re looking pretty good.”

Anderson said the American was on the radar of several NBL sides, making his signature all the more prized.

Such is the versatility of the Heat’s former Players’ Player awardee his new mentor said the team may change their style slightly to line up with his strengths.

“When we get to the end of games and need a basket we know we’ve got him so we can throw it to him to finish games for us,” Anderson said.

“He’s such a versatile offensive player … and such a great defender. (But it’s) his leadership and professionalism, he’s such a great guy and leader and he never puts a foot wrong.

“He thinks he’s in his prime so we think we’ll get the best version of Justin.”

Baker will return in stellar form, averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds for Al Sadd Doha.

He said he regarded Townsville as a second home and was eager to get back on the court with several former teammates.

“Playing in Queensland has always been an enjoyable experience for me and Townsville has always been the best place for me to play,” Baker said.

“It’s not just because of the championships I was part of but also because of the integrity and professionalism of the club. I have come to love the city of Townsville as well as its people.”

The Townsville Heat have had advanced discussions with another key signing in recent days.
