Cowboy keen to make trip to Perth birthplace

Wright said. “It’s always fun playing in the Nines. I played as a teenager back at the Titans and one year at the Cowboys.

“It’s always a good trip, but we’ll see what happens.”

The 23-year-old grew up playing soccer and Aussie rules but said as soon as he moved to the Sunshine State he took up his new love.

“It’s pretty hard (to keep playing soccer) when you grow up in North Queensland. So it was a pretty easy transition (to rugby league),” he said.

With State of Origin held in Perth last year and the Nines next week, Wright didn’t rule out a NRL team calling the city home in the near future.

“I think it could be a huge growing place for the sport over there. Maybe in a few years’ time it could happen.”

Wright is in a battle for a backrow position at the Cowboys and said his workrate would be the key for him in order to pinch a starting jersey.

“I think I have to work hard and be more consistent through the year, whether that be attack or defence.

“Getting a few 80 minute games under my belt gives me the confidence to know I can actually play 80. It’s just working on that so I can maintain that.”

Coming off a strong preseason under the watchful eye of coach Paul Green, Wright said the hard work spent at 1300SMILES Stadium over the summer would give the side an advantage.

“I think it’s a bonus for us, I think you get an edge especially when the away teams come up here in the earlier rounds.

“We trained pretty well before Christmas and I thought we all came back pretty good and in shape.”
