BATTLE OF HER LIFE

- SAM FLANAGAN, MIKAYLA MAYOH

A HORROR quad bike crash has left a 22-yearold Ayr woman fighting for life.

Taylah Pearson was a passenger on the bike when it rolled. She suffered serious head injuries in the crash and was flown to Townsville University Hospital where she remained in a critical condition. It is understood she is the daughter of a Burdekin Shire Council worker.

Two men have been charged in relation to the incident.

The Forensic Crash Unit was continuing to investigate the crash.

A YOUNG Ayr woman was left fighting for life after she was flung from a quad bike when it flipped in a horror crash.

Taylah Pearson, 22, was a passenger on the bike when it rolled on Old Home Hill Rd at Mcdesme about 8.30pm on Thursday.

Ms Pearson suffered serious head injuries in the crash and was flown to Townsville University Hospital, where she remained in a critical condition last night.

It is understood she is the daughter of a Burdekin Shire Council worker.

The Burdekin community is rallying around Ms Pearson, a former Ayr State High School student and Wilmar Sugar apprentice.

“Fight hard beautiful lady,” Janet Delaney said.

“Prayers are with Taylah and her family for her recovery,” Mareena Vecchio said.

Police said preliminary information suggested three quad bikes carrying five people were travelling together along Old Home Hill Rd when one of the vehicles flipped over, causing the driver and passenger to fall off.

A 23-year-old man from Home Hill was driving the quad bike Ms Pearson was on.

He was not seriously injured in the crash.

The man is assisting police with inquiries.

Police charged a 22-yearold driver of one of the other accompanying quad bikes with drink driving, not wearing a helmet, driving unregistered and driving unlicensed.

A third driver, a 21-yearold Ayr man, was also charged with drink driving.

Both men are due to appear in Ayr Magistrates Court on August 17.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

The crash comes almost two years after Cory Briant died after he was thrown off a quad bike at Home Hill.

Mr Briant tragically died after he suffered fatal chest injuries when he was thrown from his bike when he struck a drain on Mcdowell Rd on November 3, 2018.

Last year the Federal Government announced it would introduce a new safety standard for new quad bikes to prevent injuries and deaths.

All new quad bikes now need to have information affixed to them about the degree of slope at which they will start to overturn, while from next year all new general-use quad bikes will need to conform with minimum standards for stability on slopes and will need a rollbar.
