Dogs hungry for title

- NICK WRIGHT

TO come so close to a title last year has the Thuringowa Bulldogs eagerly awaiting the return of Aussie rules.

Even throughout the sport’s hiatus during the coronavirus pandemic there is a buzz to bounce back from the heartache of last year.

And for Bulldogs forward Reiley Guest the circumstances of season 2020 will do nothing to diminish what a win would mean to the club.

AFL Queensland has unveiled a return-to-play road map, and a 10-round competition has been proposed for Townsville to tip off on July 11.

Guest said regardless of the competition format there should not be an asterisk next to this season for the title winner.

“Any team should be able to beat any side any day anywhere, Unfortunately this season we’ve been given the circumstances we have so it’s up to each team,” Guest said.

“We know what the goal is, to win the flag and we’re coming in on the same page. “We all know the scene, everyone is aware of that and then it’s on for everyone. Once that ball goes up to start round one may the best team win – you have to make the best of it.”

Considering the circumstances 2020 has thrown at sporting communities Guest said the proposed 10-round competition was a perfect fit.

The format would allow for each team to play each other twice before a finals series with an even home and away structure.

A COVID-19 safety officer is also expected to be employed at clubs to ensure they are compliant with the State Government’s health regulations. In his role with AFLQ running Auskick programs at schools across the Townsville region – something he is hopeful would resume soon – Guest has seen the passion for the code in its junior ranks. He said part of the Bulldogs’ culture was ensuring each player was in a strong frame of mind on and off the field, and it was those bonds that would steel them for a premiership charge.

“When you go from seeing 30 blokes to not seeing anyone it’s important to keep in touch and that’s what the club is about,” Guest said.

“It’s not about winning games it’s keeping those bonds.”
