Residents’ fears grow over hoon behaviour
RESIDENTS of a once quiet Thuringowa street have hit out at local hoons after a P-plater crashed his ute into a kerb at the weekend.
A grey Ford Falcon ute had damage to its back end and its back left tyre was crushed ( pictured) following impact with the kerb on Corveth St, Thuringowa.
Reports said the ute hit the kerb so hard a spare tyre in the rear flew out of the tray and rolled around on the street.
Police had earlier responded to calls from the public at about 1.50pm on Saturday, with residents reporting two males driving erratically.
A 21-year-old man from Heatley and his 23-year-old male passenger from Thuringowa were spoken to by police at the scene.
The driver was taken to a Townsville police station following the incident and was fined $311 by police for “not having proper control of the vehicle”. It remains an open investigation.
A witness at the scene said the vehicle was earlier seen doing powerslides up Hinchinbrook Drive.
Residents have been worried about hoon behaviour in the area, which the witness said was “a family neighbourhood where kids would normally be around on a fine day”.
A witness said it was only a matter of time before someone was injured or worse.
It is believed fed-up residents spoke to the driver immediately after the crash.
One of the main concerns for residents is a childcare centre at the end of the street, with young children regularly moving in and out of the building.
