Audi lover sent back to jail

- ELISABETH SILVESTER

A RECIDIVIST offender with a fetish for Audi cars had barely been out of jail for a week before he embarked on an “intensive 16-day crime spree”.

Frank Albert Ryder, 25, was on parole and unlicensed when he stole six cars and broke into five properties while on an icefuelled bender.

The Townsville District Court heard Ryder stole three Audi cars from different residences on separate occasions in early June last year as well as three other vehicles.

On June 6, Ryder broke into ABC Towing Services in Garbutt and stole the keys to a Holden Captiva.

Crown prosecutor Joshua Francis told the court that Ryder broke into four homes on June 10 but did not steal any property.

At 4am on June 11, Ryder broke into a Railway Estate property, where he stole a wallet, bank card and keys to a Holden utility.

The occupants of the home were woken to see their car being driven out of the driveway.

The court heard Ryder was seen driving a stolen Mitsubishi on June 16 but when police attempted to pull him over he sped away.

Ryder’s parole celled on June 7.

Police arrested him 12 days later after surveillance from a was can

Bohle residence unearthed the fugitive.

Police searched Ryder and found 0.2g of methamphetamines, 0.1g of cannabis and five buprenorphine strips used to treat opioid addiction in his underwear.

The court heard Ryder had a five-page criminal history and had spent the majority of the past seven and a half years in jail.

Ryder pleaded guilty to 18 offences including five counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, one count enter dwelling and commit indictable offence and three counts of possessing a dangerous drug.

Defence barrister Kelly Stone called his client’s offending “unsophisticated” and said he was “not particularly good at crime”.

Judge Gregory Lynham sentenced Ryder to two and a half years’ jail with parole eligibility on January 25, 2021.

Convictions were recorded.
