Car wrecks turf, smashes bollards
TEACHERS West’s rugby fields at Warrina Park were decimated by a rogue vehicle on Tuesday night.
The playing surface has suffered significant damage in multiple areas, with tyre marks, indentations and turf ripped up.
Three-foot-high wooden bollards that fence the grounds were also smashed through to gain entry, with two completely broken.
Teachers West club treasurer Greg Huppatz said he was notified by a resident who lives near the area that the vehicle had smashed over the bollards that fence the facility and caused the damage by “doing doughnuts and circle work”.
While the incident was reported to Mr Huppatz as a stolen vehicle, this has not yet been confirmed.
“I doubt anyone would drive their own car, smash the bollards and do the circle work,” he said.
“This is not the first time it has happened, it’s the third or fourth time I’m aware of in similar circumstances, and all previous incidents where this happened were stolen vehicles.
“You work so hard to provide sporting facilities for the youth and members of the club, to have it then damaged is disappointing.
“We’ve been a long time away from playing and we’re starting to come back together to utilise the field.”
Mr Huppatz said the incident had been reported to council and they were awaiting someone to inspect the damage and notify them as to whether they could receive assistance for the repairs.
If not, he said the onus would ultimately fall on the club.
Club coach Terry
Shiells agreed with Mr Huppatz.
“It’s more of a labour thing than a big cost,” he said.
“The council are going to go down ... and see what they can do to repair it and no doubt the club will try to fix the rest.”
