BRANDON BOWLS

THE Brandon Bowls Club A-grade singles championship has been decided with Gary Pearce victorious over Peter Henderson. It was a match worthy of its championship status with some top shelf bowls played.

On Friday night some very, competitive bowls were played. Norm Storrie, Doug Kiehne and Joy Woods wiped the trio of Rob Jorgensen, Jo Griggs and Joe Ypinazar courtesy of a rampaging start. Joy’s crew jumped out to a 14-point lead after four ends before Joe’s crew knew what was happening. Joe’s crew rallied and started to peg the score back, but ran out of time.

Margaret Mclaughlin and Gary Pearce dusted Lyn Storrie and Rino Lazzarin in a contest that went down to the wire. Gary and Margaret came from behind to win the last end by enough points to claim victory.

Hans Baas and Ray Panecassio polished off the hopes of Ross Mclaughlin and Simon Griggs with a scintillating second third of the contest.

On Sunday, 24 bowlers were on the green and played their games. The trio of Con Sexton, Jamie Woods, and Steve Nellestein shot out of the blocks and took what looked like an insurmountable lead, only for the turtle trio of Norm Storrie, Vince Beitia and Richie Mau to stealthily comeback in Ninja fashion to win the last end to give them victory.

Mick Mccloskey, Ray Panecassio and Peter Henderson went blow for blow with the trio of Rob Jorgensen, Chris Griggs and Peter Jorgensen with the result going the way of Peter’s crew with a late rally.

The trio of Ken Ferguson, Rino Lazzarin and Gary Pearce came, looked around and conquered, sanitising any hopes and dreams of the mob made up of Nev Dickinson, Rob Garner and Alan Garioch.

The last contest saw Doug Kiehne, Leo Kenny and Joe Ypinazar get their groove on late in the contest to end up winners over Dave Sheehan, Hans Baas and Simon Griggs.

This Friday will see the running of the ever-popular RLA Finance mixed triples afternoon. This is an annual Anzac Day event which, though delayed, is sure to end up with a fun day.

This year it is on the Burdekin Show holiday and although there is no official show in town, I am sure there will be enough clowns, spruikers and prize-winning bulls in attendance. There will be a first and second prize, most likely not a highly commended but there is a high likelihood that the day will finish with everyone highly delighted.

This weekend, the Friday night games will be cancelled but Sunday games will be on with names in by 1pm for a 1.30pm start. Call Gary on 0488 214 222 or the club on 0456 727 061 close to the times above.

Three A-grade pairs games will be contested on that day as well.

FOOTBALL MATTERS WITH CYCLOPS

PREMIER Men played out a 0-0 draw against Saints in Townsville. Burdekin were happy to take the result with a couple of regulars out and playing away from home.

Premier Women played Saints in Townsville and started well with some solid defence against a Saints team who passed the ball around well. After 70 minutes, Saints took a 2-1 lead after Burdekin couldn’t clear their penalty area. Logan Roncato went close to getting an equaliser before full time but Saints held on to a 2-1 win. A much better performance from the ladies despite the loss.

Reserve Women were away to Brothers on Friday night. Burdekin created scoring chances on a couple of occasions but couldn’t capitalise.

Brothers got a late goal to make it a 4-1 win. Angela Archer and Maygan Valle had great performances on the night. The ladies play Wulguru in Townsville this Friday night.

The Funkies travelled to Townsville on Friday night to play Brothers at Brolga Park. Burdekin started well and dominated from the kick off. By the end of the first half Adam Mottin had a second goal and Zac Park had also scored two. The Funkies eased off a bit in the second half but still managed to add a further two goals late in the half. Brothers had a couple of chances as well but the Burdekin defence scrambled well to keep a clean sheet. The final score was 9-0 in a big win for the Funkies.

The Youth team, away to Brothers, had another resounding win. They were leading 8-0 at half time with Dylan Meinicke having scored four goals in the first 21 minutes. Ryan Scodellaro scored two and Ben Ruskin and Jack Gimson one goal each. After the interval Burdekin eased off with Scodellaro and Ruskin adding further goals to make it a 10-0 win.

The Under 13s beat Rebels 6-0 in Townsville with three goals from Charlie Predebon and one each from Nate di Bartolo, Logan Guglielmana and Luke Hisatake. The Under 15s had a bye this week.

Walking Football continued on Monday night at International Park with a good turn out on a cool night. Smithies Smiters came back from last week’s loss to edge out Stoukies Terrors 12-10. Player of the Week was the eponymous Stephen Smith.

The Masters Annual Charity Match between Blue Balls and Rainbows will hopefully take place on October 9.

The Quote of the Week this week is from former Welsh International Lee Fowler. “Players win games, but managers give you the impotence to go and do it.”
