MUDDIES CRAWL UP LADDER

- LAURALAU THOMAS

THE Mudcrabs secured third place on the rugby union ladder after a landslide victory over the Slade Point Slashers at the weekend.

The Bowen side claimed a 53-19 victory despite a tough first 40 minutes as they battled a strong headwind.

A great strip from flanker Steve Delacourt and a smart quick tap by Lachie Davison led to the Muddies crashing over first courtesy of Nick Poole.

Slade Point then hit back twice in quick succession to take the lead before Nick Poole hit back again.

The Muddies should have been further in front after the outside centre streamed down the touch line only to run over the dead ball line before grounding the ball. The Muddies scored again just before half time to take a 17-14 lead into the break.

With the wind behind them after half time, the Muddies piled on four quick tries before Slade Point was able to register another point.

Akeam Power scored in the corner off a beautiful ball from fullback Maty Jenkins, and halfback Wendell Querro caught a magical flick pass from Ben Van Veen to score the best try of the season and take the final score to 53-10.

Coach Tom Andison said the Bowen side proved its skill in what was a very physical match.

“It was great to see the boys rally in the second half after being challenged to start the game,” he said.

Ben Van Veem was awarded three best and fairest points while Lochlan Winston scored two and Drew Morgan and Wendell Querro secured one.

The Mudcrabs will take on the undefeated Whitsunday Raiders at home this weekend, kicking off at 3.30pm.
