Devils playing for pride after maulings by Tigers

- MICHAEL THOMPSON

THE Norths Devils will be playing for homeground pride this weekend after enduring a mixed bag of results at Peggy Banfield Park over the weekend.

The club’s A grade, reserve and under-19 teams suffered tough defeats against Mackay’s West Tigers, but the club’s women’s outfit had the most promising afternoon.

Norths and Tigers played a seesawing contest, with Tigers eventually running away with a 20-12 win.

But Norths women’s coach Garry Appleby said the performance from his team was a major improvement from the previous round’s 50-4 thumping at the hands of Mackay Brothers.

“We did improve a fair bit from that last game, and we were a lot stronger defensively,” he said.

“The game got away from us in the last 5-10 minutes, but we were in the arm wrestle for most of the game.

“We suffered a couple of early injuries, a couple of head knocks, so that took its toll and made things difficult for us as the game went on.”

Norths play their final home game of the new-look local rugby league season at Peggy Banfield Park, which has attracted bumper crowds for the past two weeks.

“We want to make the most of it,” Appleby said.

Norths lost to Tigers in A grade 48-6, went down to Tigers 62-12 in reserves, and suffered a 42-14 defeat in the under-19s.

Norths this weekend host Magpies Mackay, who went down fighting 30-12 to Souths Sharks in A grade.

Townsville Brothers returns to action this weekend following the bye, and travel to play Mackay Brothers in a battle of the brethren.
