NOVEMBER 3

American musical star born in 1913. She made her name as the star of some big Broadway hit musicals including South Pacific and The Sound of Music, and also appeared in some film and TV versions of musicals. She died of cancer in 1990.

NOVEMBER 4 YITZHAK RABIN

Israeli politician born in 1922. He served two terms as prime minister of Israel. His first in 1974 to 1977. During his second term, from 1992, he won the Nobel Peace prize. He was assassinat­ed in 1995 by a right-wing extremist.

NOVEMBER 5 MACK SENNETT

Film actor, producer and director born Michael Sinnott in Canada in 1880. He became famous for his silent movie comedies but was not so successful in the sound era, being declared bankrupt in 1933. He died in 1960.

NOVEMBER 6 CLIVE DUNN

British actor born 1920. He served in WWII and later became well known for his role as Lance Corporal Jones in the sitcom Dad’s Army set in WWII. He died in 2012.

NOVEMBER 7 STEVE MCQUEEN

American actor born in 1930. He served in the marines and the navy before pursuing a career as an actor on stage, TV and in movies such as The Magnificen­t Seven, The Great Escape, Bullitt, and The Towering Inferno. He died of heart failure during surgery for lung cancer in 1980.

NOVEMBER 8 DOC HOLLIDAY

American gunfighter born John Holliday in 1851. He earnt a degree in dentistry, setting up practice in Pennsylvan­ia but went west when diagnosed with tuberculos­is. He became a wellknown gunslinger and gambler, fought at the Gunfight at the OK Corral and died of TB in 1887.

NOVEMBER 9 CHARLES DE GAULLE

French general and politician born in 1890. He served in WWI and emerged as leader of the Free French in WWII. He served as president of France from 1959 to 1969 and died in 1970.
