IN OUR DEAR 2045

- JASMINE GIBSON, YEAR 12 ST MARGARET MARY’S COLLEGE

LAST year, St Margaret Mary’s College had the privilege of opening a time capsule buried in 1988 by our past students.

Inside we found letters from the students at the time and different pieces of memorabilia such as a newspaper, old calculator, and the SMMC school uniform from 1988.

As a SMMC Year 12 student in 2020, my English class and I were excited to be a part of something big that we could all contribute to during our final months of being a Maggie.

Together, with the help of our supporting teachers and Mrs Karen Cumner, we have pieced together a new time capsule for the year 2020.

The Time Capsule called “The Boss”, is a large stainless steel cylinder 550mm high, 29kg in weight with a volume of 38.7 litres.

The Time Capsule was blessed by Father Shilbin during our 2020 Feast Day liturgy and then buried underneath the three flags at the entrance to the school.

This is a sacred spot of SMMC and we wish to continue that through the years to come.

As a class we decided that the reopening of this new time capsule should be held in 2045, which we hope will be a very significant day for the Maggies at the time and, of course, the Maggies of today.

We wanted the new time capsule to represent 2020 to the best of our ability.

We included things such as letters from each year level explaining their personal experiences as a proud SMMC student and also the popular culture for their age group.

The new time capsule also includes a 2020 senior jersey, the new school uniform and photos from around the school.

This includes the damage the school experienced during the floods and the new renovations resulting from that.

Other items include students’ experiences with COVID-19 and online studying.

By doing so, our class has learnt so much about the school we attend and how truly proud we are to be a Maggie.
