Proactive policing nabs drug, drink-drivers at the weekend

POLICE picked up seven alleged drink or drug-driving offenders in Charters Towers over 48 hours at the weekend.

Charters Towers Police Station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Neil King said officers were proactive in getting out and about on the roads all weekend, stopping lots of drivers and conducting licence checks and roadside breath and drug tests.

Sergeant King said police had zero tolerance for this type of offending, which was avoidable.

Police stopped a 29-yearold Charters Towers man on Day Dawn Rd at 12.45am on

Friday. It is alleged he had a blood alcohol concentrat­ion of .094 per cent and he has been given a notice to appear in court on March 22.

A 19-year-old Charters Towers man will appear in court on May 4 after he was stopped in a vehicle on Deane St.

It will be alleged he recorded a positive drug test when he was tested at 2am on Sunday.

A Richmond woman will appear in court in April after she was pulled over at 5.38am on York St.

It is alleged the 27-year-old tested positive to drugs and has been given a notice to appear on April 19.

Police stopped a P-plate holder on Wellington Rd for roadside tests at 4.45am on Sunday.

It will be alleged the 17year-old male had a blood alcohol reading of .031 per cent.

He is due to appear in Charters Towers Magistrate­s Court on March 8.

A 43-year-old Charters Towers man was stopped at 11pm on Towers St on Sunday.

It will be alleged he tested positive for drugs and he will now appear in court on April 6.

A Broughton woman was stopped for a roadside test on Stockroute Rd at 12.51pm on Sunday.

It will be alleged she tested positive to drugs and she has been given a notice to appear in court in April.

Police stopped a 46-yearold man in a vehicle in King St at 12.17am on Monday.

The man allegedly tested positive for drug driving and will appear in court on May 4.

Police are investigat­ing the circumstan­ces surroundin­g graffiti that was left on signage on a Gill St business.

It was reported that six juveniles in secondary school uniform were observed on CCTV at 4.05pm last Thursday and seen vandalisin­g signage on the right side of a building.

Police said the tags left by the alleged offenders had been identified and they were seeking a number of suspects to speak with in relation to the matter.

Sergeant King said there was good CCTV coverage of the main streets and police were confident they would be able to close the matter in the near future.

A Charters Towers man has been charged with possessing utensils and possessing property suspected of being used in the commission of a drug offence this week.

Police will allege the man was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for a roadside test on

Enterprise Rd at 12.20pm on Friday. It is alleged that police found several clipseal bags, a plastic straw and a pipe belonging to the 32-year-old passenger.

He is scheduled to appear in Charters Towers Magistrate­s Court on March 22.

A Stones Corner man will appear in court in April charged with driving while disqualifi­ed.

Police allege the man was driving on Gill St at 10am on Friday when he was found to be unlicensed due to disqualifi­cation.

He has been given a notice to appear in court on April 19.
