THERE is no doubt that team sports like hockey have great physical benefits for children who participate.

It gets them moving and outdoors but there are also plenty of emotional and mental benefits to participating in sport as well.

Through sport, kids can develop their self-esteem and confidence with simple gestures like a high-five or some cheering from teammates and coaches. They learn about teamwork and become better communicators, vital skills for adulthood.

Team sport also teaches respect. Players learn good sportsmanship and how to treat teammates, opponents, umpires, coaches and spectators with respect. This sportsmanship can also translate into developing stronger relationships and a sense of being part of a community.

So while having child participating in a team sport has plenty of benefits, how do you choose one that suits your child? Townsville Hockey Association may have the answer by way of its Mini Sticks program.

Mini Sticks isn’t about playing to win. Participants start in the beginner level and progress as their skills develop, under the guidance of qualified coaches and mentors.

With two sessions each week in a couple of locations during school terms, parents can sign their kids up to one, or both depending on what best suits their schedule.

The new term for Mini Sticks starts this week but there is still time to register. All new participants will receive a free hockey stick, socks and shirt.
