BELL TOWER SENDS MESSAGE COMPANY MEANS BUSINESS

- TRUDY BROWN

THE first new bell tower to be erected in Charters Towers in more than a century has been raised at Goldtower Central and is expected to ring out soon.

A gold-coloured roof sits atop the tower, which is modelled on the heritagelisted Lutheran Church bell tower in Anne Street.

Goldtower managing director Paul Mciver said getting the tower erected on the site had been a long process.

“I’m really excited because this has been two years in the making,” Mr Mciver said.

“We’ve had to engage with engineers, designers, planners and construction companies to put this together.

“Our entry piece is made of a special steel called corten steel … the roof is actually gold, it’s a stainless steel goldcoloured roof.

“Our builders have spent one month putting the roof together piece by piece out of shingles. We’ve built the town’s new bell tower to last for 250 years.”

The tower roof is a one of a kind, built and designed by Rod Coleman of Townsville, who built the roof of the small tower in Palmer Street, Townsville 45 years ago.

Installed on the top is a state-of-the-art, 1.2m high lightning arrester and lighting strike counter.

“Goldtower is committed to giving the region new life, by building statement pieces that will attract both business and visitors,” Mr Mciver said.

He said the new bell tower announced to the world that

Goldtower was open for business.

“We want new businesses to come and set up here,” he said.

“This is where future growth is for North Queensland. We’re gearing up. We’re going to bring new business, new money, more growth to town.”
