Warning to be vigilant after 3 school break-ins

- TRUDY BROWN

POLICE are reminding people to be on the look out for trespassers around schools after three incidents at local schools in the past week.

Charters Towers Police Station officer in charge Senior Sergeant Neil King said it was an offence for people to be on the premises of a state education institution unless the person had a reasonable excuse or lawful authority to be there.

He said just being unlawfully on school grounds could attract fines of up to $2200.

Overnight, on Tuesday, the port racks, a door and a wall on A Block were graffitied at Central State School in High Street. The buildings were graffitied sometime between 5pm on Tuesday and 5am on Wednesday. Louvres were removed by two suspects at Charters Towers State High School at 2.30am on May 9.

Sergeant King said CCTV footage captured two alleged suspects entering the art block and later the manual arts building. He said it was alleged the two had a pair of tin snips or shears with them at the time access was gained to both buildings. Nothing was reported stolen.

A window was reported damaged at Richmond Hill State School last Thursday.

The damage to the window of the music classroom, which Sergeant King said was suspected to have been done using a rocklike object, happened overnight between 7pm on May 5 and 6am on May 6.

ELECTRONICS TAKEN

Two Playstations, two phones and a laptop were taken from an Oxford Street property in the early hours of Tuesday.

It was reported to police that between 1am and 7am the property was entered and the electronics stolen from several rooms.

METH, AMMO, PILLS

A Kirwan man has been charged with nine offences after he was stopped by police in Bow Street in the early hours of Mother’s Day.

The 33-year-old was intercepted at 2.30am after police noticed the rear number plate was missing.

It will be alleged that further checks showed the number plate on the front of the vehicle was false.

As a result of the stop, police searched the vehicle. It will be alleged they found two small clipseal bags containing .5g of a crystalline substance and a medicine bottle containing three tablets believed to be diazepam and suboxone paper tabs. Police also allegedly found 22 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition.

The man has been charged with two counts of possession of a dangerous drug, unlawful possession of a controlled drug, possession of a drug utensil, possessing explosives without authority, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and using false number plates. He is scheduled to appear in the Charters Towers Magistrates Court on June 1.
