Miners girls blow away the opposition

- TRUDY BROWN

THE Sproat Water Trucks and Retro Hair Design Under 15 Miners Girls recorded a win at the weekend, although not the way they wanted it.

The Miners won by a forfeit due to Brothers not being able to field a full side.

Maddy Masso and Bridget Wosomo agreed to play for Brothers to even up the sides so the players could get some game fitness at 9-a-side.

The kick-off was a bad start for the Miners who knocked on and allowed Brothers to score in their first set and convert.

It didn’t take Bayley Gibson long to score the Miners’ first try for the season from 10m out.

This lifted the team’s confidence and the Miners started b breaking tackles.

Ada Black made a break down the right side getting the Miners within 40m of the tryline.

Summer Glenwright burst through the defence scoring her first try and then converting it.

Another mistake off the kick-off by the Miners gave Brothers another opportunity to score, but they could not break through the Charters Towers defence.

Lillee Rodighiero saw an opportunity at 60m out and went through a gap to score.

Summer took a catch off a kick and ran through a gap with more confidence and scored a try under the posts, which Bayley converted.

Then it was Bayley’s turn to cross the line, again from close range and Summer converted.

Sally Frohloff’s response from the kick-off got the Miners within 10m of the tryline.

Two plays later Sally crossed from dummy half for a try, which Summer converted taking the Miners into halftime full of confidence.

In the second half the Miners girls were eager in defence, stopping Brothers from getting their fifth tackle kick away.

This meant the Miners started on the halfway with Sally making a dart from dummy half looking around for support and finding Summer who went through for her third try, which was converted.

The Brothers girls worked the ball down the field and crossed under the posts and converted to add to their tally.

This seemed to encourage the Miners girls to lift in intensity.

A Brothers mistake off the kick-off gave the Miners an attacking chance on the left edge and after supporting every run Cheneece Nelson crossed to score the team’s final try, winning 56-16.
