TBT protesters demand action to combat youth crime

- CAITLAN CHARLES

THE battle to Take Back Townsville has reignited with the group’s founder Julianne Wood gearing up to strike back against the young offenders holding the city to ransom.

This weekend, the anti-crime crusader will take to the streets again with many in the community demanding for more to be done.

She will hold another protest at the intersection of Ross River Road and Nathan Street, in front of Herbert MP Phillip Thompson’s office.

This follows two days of significant youth offending in Townsville.

Ms Wood said she was shocked and dismayed at the actions of young offenders in Townsville.

She said two years ago there was another day just like this, when the airport was shut down when a helicopter went up, the police were stretched to the limit and the community was scared.

“Two years down the track, we’re actually sitting here doing the exact same thing,” Ms Wood said. “In my opinion it’s a lot worse.”

The last protest she held was following the death of Jennifer Board who died in a crash earlier this year.

Ms Wood, who ran for the Katter’s

Australian Party on an anti-crime ticket at the last state election, said the community had cried out for help enough.

“I think it’s up to us to say, ‘you’re the government, you’re the people that make the decisions, you make the right decisions that are going to be best for us, the ball is in your court’,” she said.

Ms Wood wants people to wear Take Back Townsville shirts and bring white balloons to the protest at 9am today.
