Meadows turns it on

- NICK WRIGHT

EVERYTHING finally clicked for Curra Swans rover Tom Meadows as he inspired an emphatic victory for his team.

The defending champions stretched their winning streak with a thumping 25.11 (161) to 5.6 (36) victory over Northern Beaches Suns in the Townsville RMS Engineering Men’s Premiership.

It is a stretch that dates back to the start of last season, and coach Jamie Fogg said it was courtesy of a growing list of players capable of dominating on field.

On Saturday it chance to show that.

It had been a lean period in front of goals for the Swan, however his four goal effort set the tone for the triumph.

He was supported brilliantly by Craig Crichton and Thomas Kelly, who each kicked four goals as well.

But perhaps most impressive for Fogg was not Meadows’s statistics, rather the nature in which he attained the numbers he had.

His dynamic star was eventually forced from the field with injury, however Fogg said it was more a prewas

Meadows’s cautionary step given how far ahead they were on the scoreboard.

“He’s so clean below his knees, he played rover for us charging into the forward line and a couple of goals he kicked were when he was actually on the ball,” Fogg said.

“He’s played senior footy in Cairns so we knew we were getting a good footballer. He’s probably taken a bit of time to find his groove and (on Saturday) he was outstanding.

“He’s been in that role but we’ve had an abundance of rovers so it has been a three way change. But (on Saturday) it was him and Jack Mcdonald complementing each other.

“One was hard at the footy, the other was damaging up forward.”

There were two plusses for Curra that came out of the contest.

One was the fact they were left with only one player on the bench, the likes of Jake Mckenna making an impact despite having just played four quarters in reserve grade.

The other was the fact that despite always being well in front, the final quarter was their most comprehensive.

Curra did not concede a single point in the term, while also putting on a game high 51.
