The right resort

Top ways to save on a family holiday

-

It seems you need a Masters in financial planning to navigate a family holiday without breaking the budget, but resorts offer a treasure trove of ways to save. Pick the right one and it will be worth it.

Savvy tip 1

Hunt out apartment-style resorts such as The Sebel Twin Waters on the Sunshine Coast, Peppers Soul Surfers Paradise and Mantra on Salt Beach Kingscliff. “Our two- and threebedroom apartment-style room options are popular for families,” says Accor Pacific CEO Simon Mcgrath, adding kitchens remove the need to eat every meal out. Oaks Resorts also offer up to three-bedroom villas.

Savvy tip 2

My Holiday Centre’s Rod Carrington’s advice is to look for “kids eat free” and “free kids’ club” inclusions from resort packages.

Savvy tip 3

Travel outside peak school holiday periods and during the week if you have the flexibility. “The lowest average daily rate for accommodation in a domestic destination is on a Monday, when Aussies could save almost 15 per cent versus staying on the most expensive day, which is a Saturday,” Expedia’s Justine Yusi says.

Savvy tip 4

Janeece Keller, owner of Family Travel (familytravel.com.au) and mum of two, says if you aren’t bound by school holidays, you can get good last-minute deals from Expedia and booking.com from resorts trying to fill occupancy. On the other hand, “booking far in advance can secure a good price from resorts wanting to lock in occupancy early.”

Savvy tip 5

Resorts that offer all-inclusive packages are a great way for a family to budget, Keller says. “Resorts like Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Club Med will package together accommodation, all meals, kids’ club and other options so you know what you’re up for at the outset of a holiday.”
