A HIGH-QUALITY commercial building developed in Aitkenvale by the BM Webb group is hoped to lift the profile and appearance of the area.

The property has been named Italian on Fleming, paying homage to its history as the home for many years of the Townsville Italo Australian Sporting Association, more commonly known as the Italian club.

“We’ve put a fair bit into it and a fair bit of thought. I think it’s going to lift the area fairly substantially,” BM Webb Group property manager Jeff Turner said.

“It’s a good space. We can have a variety of different things here.”

The former club buildings were demolished and a warehouse and commercial building has been developed over the 3200 sqm site.

Little expense has been spared on the development with high clearance tenancies to 8m and a glass frontage has been preferred to roller doors to improve its appearance to the street.

Not-for-profit organisation Althea Projects, which provides support to vulnerable individuals and families throughout the region, has leased 500 sqm for offices.

Other tenants include Avie More Highland Dancing, IT Solutions and The Funky Barbers who will take space in an arcade formed at one end of the building.

About 700 sqm is available for lease which Mr Turner said could be modified to the size or the kinds of uses envisaged.

It could suit a gym or a small bulky goods retailer like a BCF or Anaconda, he said.

“It has high ceilings to about 8m at the back of the building but we can do whatever is needed, put a ceiling in, walls and different things,” Mr Turner said.

“There’s plenty of parking, about 42 parking spots on-site.

Mr Turner said they would be interested to hear from anyone about the history of the Italian club.

Playing soccer as a child, Mr Turner said he could recall visiting the club to be presented with their track suits before travelling to Gino Paris carnivals.

Many a game of bocce was played in its grounds.

The club also celebrated early Italian pioneers of the region.

“We’ve named the building Italian on Fleming in honour of the old Italian club. The former building has been pulled down but we don’t want that history to disappear. Italian on Fleming is also a good point of call,” Mr Turner said.

“If anyone knows any of the history, we’d love to hear about it.” >>Mr Turner can be contacted on 4774 7880 or jeff@bmwebb.com
