Hobby proves dream job

- TONY RAGGATT

A BEAUTY professional who started her career as a hobby helping friends and family with their makeup has taken the next big step by opening her first makeup and beauty salon.

Lan Cox operates Your Canvas at Rising Sun Plaza in Hermit Park and employs three people including an apprentice beautician.

Ms Cox said her interest in makeup began about five years ago as a “casual thing” on weekends.

She had worked with Telstra in the faults and complaints section.

But she gave up that job two years ago to concentrate on a burgeoning makeup business.

She has since completed courses in brow waxing, cosmetic tattooing and eyelash extensions.

“I used to run it from home but it grew too big,” Ms Cox said.

“After the Covid lockdown last year I said ‘ why not get a place of my own.’

“I did not expect to be where I am right now. It’s something that just happened but I’m glad it did.”

Your Canvas has a 90sq m tenancy in Charters Towers Rd, an area of the city where the for lease signs increasingly are coming down and small businesses are moving in.

For Ms Cox, parking and access is the key ingredient.

“It has good on-site parking outside the salon and it’s central, not too far from anywhere,” Ms Cox said.

Colliers Townsville leasing agent Ben Wheeler said while the leasing market was patchy in the city, it was certainly improving, particularly along Charters Towers Rd. “At the beginning of 2021 you could drive up Charters Towers Rd and there would be for lease signs everywhere,” Mr Wheeler said. “Now the tenancies are getting snapped up.

“Rising Sun Plaza is a great property with good on-site carparking and exposure.”

The sales market has kicking in Townsville, along Charters Towers Rd.

Some of the recent deals include the sale of the former Toys R Us property for $2.75m to Sydney group Eastbrooke which is planning a health hub supported by a medical centre, child care centre and cafes.

Also on Charters Towers Rd, the former Eureka Furniture showroom and warehouse has been sold for $1.35m to Kevin Rebgetz, the operator of Wildcatz Indoor Sports Arenas in Thuringowa Central.

In another recent deal, an old two level building needing a lot of work sold for just $348,000 and will become the new home for Liz Zappala Clothing Alterations. also been including
