Townsville ladies braced for the Masters State Championships
THE midweek cold snap predicted for southern Queensland is not enough to deter the Townsville Masters Ladies teams from playing their best at the State Championships that start on Friday in Warwick.
Townsville is sending three teams to compete against teams from around the state, made up of players aged 34 years and up. The Townsville teams will compete in
Division 2, 3 and 5 playing at least five games over three days. Team 1 coach Shane Davis said they are looking forward to playing some good hockey and having some fun, even in the cold temperatures.
“All three teams are looking good and we should have a good chance in our divisions,” Davis said.
“The cold weather is not something we are used to, but we’ll manage.”
The Masters Women’s competition is one of the largest in the state and anyone thinking that it is not as competitive as other, younger championships should think again. These ladies play to win but they also play for the love of the game.
A number of Townsville players will also be vying for Queensland selection. Townsville has been quite successful in the past with QLD selections across all age divisions and this year shouldn’t be any different. The National Men’s and Women’s Masters Championships will be held in Newcastle in October.
So, with plenty of winter woollies packed, the Townsville teams are ready for a great weekend of hockey and a chance to catch up with friends from around the state who all share a love of the game.
