DEBUT GUN OUT TO ONE UP BEARS

- NICK WRIGHT

WITH his Aaron Payne Cup debut fast approaching, Ignatius Park five-eighth Reece Foley is ready to surprise the competition.

At just 15 there is plenty of growth left in Foley, however his Academy training with the North Queensland Cowboys and starring role for the Townsville Blackhawks’ U16s side has him ready to embrace schoolboy rugby league’s greatest rivalry.

With nine players still standing from last year’s grand final defeat at the hands of the Kirwan Bears, no player is scarce on motivation to launch the campaign with a bang.

But Ignatius Park coach Steve Lansley believes Foley will shock their rivals in what he brings alongside established halfback Tom Duffy.

“I’m looking forward to seeing Reece because I think he’s a special talent. I thought that since I first saw him play,” Lansley said.

“I know he’s young but I honestly believe he’ll have a great season for us. I think what Reece brings, Tom will run the team then Reece will bring a running game I think a lot of people won’t expect.

“He’s quick and he’ll bring a running element to our halves that will compliment Tom’s organisation.

“He’ll get stronger, he definitely has a lot more maturing to do body wise but he’s a tough kid and his pace will worry some teams.”

Foley is refusing to shy away from his responsibilities.

His time with North Queensland and the Blackhawks has taught him plenty despite his youth — encouraged now on how to dictate terms in the throes of a contest.

“I’m excited and keen for the opportunity, I’m looking to do well. I’m young so I’ll be having a crack and having a dig," Foley said.

“It’s really positive (around training), we’re all working together well and gelling together as a team.

“I’ll be looking to play with determination and really fight for everything.”
