Governor on the go in North

- TRUDY BROWN

QUEENSLAND Governor Paul de Jersey is to undertake a week of vice-regal duties from Charters Towers.

Operations of the Regional Government House will be conducted from Charters Towers, replicating as far as possible what would otherwise happen in Brisbane, starting on Monday.

Using Charters Towers as a base, Mr de Jersey (pictured) will also visit Julia Creek and C r o y d o n , t r a v e l l i n g more than 4100km throughout the week.

Mr de Jersey will undertake at least 33 program elements, including receiving a briefing from local government representatives, visiting three local schools, visiting and meeting emergency services personnel, hosting community receptions, presiding at a meeting of the Executive Council of Queensland from Croydon, meeting business owners and visiting community organisations.

This is the seventh Regional Government House undertaken by Mr de Jersey, following successful programs based in Cairns (2015), Longreach (2016), Mackay (2017), Cairns and Weipa (2018), Mount Isa (2019) and Gladstone (2020).

Regional Government House is one of two initiatives introduced by Mr de Jersey to increase opportunities for Queenslanders to interact with their governor – the other was introducing vice-regal use of social media to Australia.

Mr de Jersey was sworn in as Queensland’s 26th governor on July 29, 2014, for an initial five-year term, and fulfils important constitutional, ceremonial and community duties.

His term will end on November 1 this year, when current state chief health officer Jeannette Young becomes the third medical doctor to be sworn in as Queensland governor.
