Townsville Bulletin

Thirty years of backing region

- BY CLAUDIA BRUMME-SMITH

PLANNING for the Townsville of tomorrow has been the Townsville Enterprise mantra from day dot. In 1991 our founding father, then mayor Tony Mooney united the city’s business and community leaders to create and drive a clear economic and social agenda for the region.

Beyond election cycles, we maintain the clear focus on the growth of Townsville North Queensland. No matter who represents us in Brisbane and Canberra, Townsville Enterprise remains a consistent and independent voice and we are here to stay.

Tonight, we celebrate Townsville Enterprise’s 30th anniversary to reflect on the milestones achieved for the region but with a laser sharp lens on the future.

It’s only with the support of our members and partners that we have been able to secure game-changing projects for our community for three decades. From convincing Korea Zinc to base the Sun Metals Refinery in Townsville not Gladstone; advocating for a catalytic piece of infrastructure that was always destined to be more than just a stadium; launching Australia’s first underwater museum in the middle of a pandemic; standing by the facts to open the Galilee

Basin and create thousands of local jobs; and boosting our liveability by attracting Supercars and PBR events to Townsville.

These projects have supported the development of our region long term and continue to deliver positive impacts. Sun Metals employs 800 locals and continue to evolve into a green energy powerhouse, our stadium has hosted over 200 events in the past 18 months, Bravus based its regional headquarters in Townsville and attracted hundreds of new residents, and the Museum of Underwater Art is putting our region front of mind across the world.

While we were often the leading face of these efforts, the support from our members and the business community is what turned our voices into roars. The Townsville Bulletin has also been a key part of our advocacy and amplifying the work of Townsville Enterprise to get outcomes for our community.

As we continue to lay the groundwork for our region’s next 30 years, the future is looking bright. We’re moving into an exciting era harnessing our capabilities in the emerging industries of critical minerals processing, high value cropping, and green hydrogen power to meet the needs of the economy of the future, leveraging our strategic advantages in the Indo-pacific, and cementing our position as the investment hub of Northern Australia.

It’s been an incredible journey with as many highs as hurdles, but we’ve never felt alone in our ambition to get what’s best for Townsville North Queensland. That hunting in packs mentality continues to set our region apart from the others.

We appreciate the support of our members as we all work towards ensuring Townsville North Queensland is the best place it can be. Thank you to those who have stood with us on this journey, we are proud of our past 30 years.
